While living in California, I frequently visited the Huntington Gardens in San Marino, highlighting the most comprehensive display of desert plants anywhere in the world. The detail of a cactus struck me as an abstract landscape, an imaginary vista from another planet. I had just begun this painting when a difficult personal circumstance arose in my life that tested my resolve. The serendipity of the “spiky” situation was not lost on my psyche. Painting became a cathartic process paralleling how I felt about the distress of the event: the spines representing the difficulty, the beauty of the flower reflecting the people who were brought together because of the upset. The title, My Point of View, sums up both points of intention.
